Spicy Turkey Lettuce Wraps

I saw this recipe on Pinterest and I knew that I had to try it because I'm all about a good spicy lettuce wrap. One of our favorite restaurants for Happy Hour have the best chicken lettuce wrap appetizers that I get each time. And one of my favorite recipes to make at home is PF Chang's "copy cat" lettuce wraps. What can I say... I think they're so delicious!!

Other than the lettuce, I had all of the ingredients for this recipe so after last night's strenuous and exhausting boxing class, I hurried home to make this for Greg, his brother, and myself-- we were famished!!

Ingredients:
1 pound of lean ground turkey
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of cumin
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of chili powder
1 teaspoon of paprika
1/2 teaspoon of oregano
1 small onion, minced
2 Tablespoon bell pepper, minced (I did not use this)
3/4 cup of water
4 ounce can of tomato sauce
8 large lettuce leaves from iceberg lettuce

Optional toppings: Cherry tomatoes, sour cream, cheese...

Directions:
1.) Brown the turkey in a large skillet.

2.) While the turkey is cooking, make the seasoning. I loved how simple these ingredients were! Add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder.

2.) Add 1 teaspoon of cumin (I looove cumin)

3.) Add 1 teaspoon of salt.

4.) Add 1 teaspoon of chili powder.

5.) Add 1 teaspoon of paprika.

6.) Add 1/2 teaspoon of oregano.

7.) Chop up the onion.

8.) While you have your cutting board and knife out, dice up some cherry tomatoes for your lettuce wraps.

9.) Add the onions and the 4 ounces of tomato sauce to the ground turkey once it is fully cooked. Cover the pan and let simmer on low for about 20 minutes.

10.) Wash and dry the lettuce (I actually used cabbage) and peel back pieces of the lettuce for the wraps. I loathe this process for any lettuce wrap recipes. Gah, it's so annoying-- you never know if you're going to get a good piece! And no... I unfortunately don't have any good tips. Just be careful!

11.) Top your lettuce wrap with any topping that you like. I like to use Organic Valley's sour cream and colby jack organic cheese. YUM.

Verdict: We three LOVED this recipe. The turkey was soooo flavorful and delicious. I have to be honest... I tried a new recipe for turkey meatballs last week, took photos, and had the intentions of sharing this recipe too, but they turned out SOOO bland. I was worried that these turkey lettuce wraps would turn out bland too... but the mix of spices were JUST right (and actually not that spicy)

After working out really hard at boxing class, this meal was just what we all needed. It was filling and tasty. I had three. Hah!

Greg and I (and all of America too ;-)) have a Super Bowl party to attend on Sunday and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to bring over this recipe for us to snack on. It was just so tasty and good for you too!!

Can't wait to make these spicy turkey lettuce wraps again!!

  1. Looks delicious!! I'm such a fan of using lettuce for a wrap instead of tortilla's or the like, it gives it such a fresh taste.
